[1] The dedications IG II³ 4, 329-352 document the ephebate, the two-years of “national service” for young male citizens between the ages of 18 and 20, in its relatively short period of operation under the Classical democracy, between 334/3 and 322/1 BC. See further RO 89, a dedication by the ephebes of Kekropis from the same enrolment year as this dedication (334/3 BC), inscribed with decrees of the Council, the tribe and relevant demes, and the notes thereto (which include references to other ephebic inscriptions of this period carrying decrees of demes and/or tribes). Friend also includes as his T11, IG II² 2401 = SEG 39.184 (cf. notes to IG II³ 4, 336); Friend T15 = Reinmuth no. 15 = I Oropos 353, a dedication from the Amphiaraion by ephebes of Leontis; Friend T19 = Reinmuth no. 12, a dedication from the Agora by ephebes of Oineis. In the third century the ephebate was reduced to one year and was voluntary. Many fewer young men served as ephebes and it became customary to honour them with inscribed Assembly decrees, see IG II³ 1, 917, 957, 981, 986, 1003, etc.; AIO Papers 4, 20-21, 25-26. The latest monuments with inscribed decrees date to the period between Sulla and Augustus: AIO 1798, 1836, 924, 1838, 1837. For the ephebic dedications of the Hellenistic and Roman periods see IG II³ 4, 357 with n. 1 and AIUK 11 (Ashmolean), no. 10. [2] This Konon was the son and grandson of famous generals, Timotheos and Konon. Cf. RO 11 n. 8. The younger Konon and Sophilos also served in the generalships attested for them here in 333/2 BC (see IG II³ 4, 330, IG II³ 4, 334 ll. 8-9, IG II³ 4, 337 ll. 4-5). The tribe in this case was perhaps Antiochis (thus Friend) or Erechtheis. In these dedications the ephebes referred to themselves by the year in which they started their service, in this case 334/3 BC, though the dedication will actually have been made at the end of their term, i.e. 332/1 BC. The relief depicts a standing Athena, with shield and spear.
