[1] This is an ephebic catalogue of the type that was erected annually from the late first century AD until the end of the ephebate in 267 AD. For the format, see AIUK 11 (Ashmolean), no. 10 and AIO Papers 12 sect. 1.3, and for the earlier history of the ephebate, see RO 89. For the opening invocation of the emperor, cf. IG II² 1990. The ephebes of this year also erected an honorific herm for their superintendent (IG II² 3738). [2] The six controllers (sophronistai) were annual officials tasked with overseeing the discipline of the ephebes, inculcating them with the virtue of self-discipline (sophrosyne). They also oversaw the teams (systremmata) into which the ephebes were divided (see IG II² 2087). The controllers were chosen from the fathers of the year’s ephebes. In this cohort, the sons appear together at the start of the list of regular ephebes (ll. 36-40, no sons of Hermeias and Stachys seem to be recorded). The controllers had been ephebic officials in the late fourth century BC, but the position lapsed around 300 BC (see IG II² 1156; J. L. Friend, Athenian Ephebeia, 2019, 61-70, 141-47; T. R. Henderson, Springtime of the People, 2020, 81-93). This inscription is the first attestation of the office in the Roman period – it appears to have been revived as part of the archaising reforms which took place in the reign of Hadrian (117-138 AD). The controllers were assisted by six deputy controllers (hyposophronistai), who were younger men and did not have sons in the cohort; they do not appear in this inscription and are first attested in IG II² 2054 of 145/6 AD. See AIO Papers 12 sect. 2.1. [3] The relief depicts the ephebes crowning the superintendent (kosmetes). For a photograph of the top of this stele, including this relief see AIUK 4.3B, Fig. 2.2. This scene is common on ephebic catalogues, see IG II² 2017 and 2208. The superintendent, Archelaos, is named at l. 10. He went through the ephebate in 108/9 AD (AIUK 11 (Ashmolean), no. 6, l. 23). One of the ephebes depicted crowning him may be intended to depict his son, Moschos, who was the first ephebic gymnasiarch of the year (ll. 13-14). It was common in the Roman period for the sons of the superintendent to be prominent in the cohort in this way. Another three sons are attested in various contexts (see Athenian Onomasticon). [5] The archon Flavius Alkibiades belonged to one of the most prominent families in second century Athens. His career is summarised in IG II² 3592. For the date, see Byrne, RCA, p. 508. Moschos (ll. 13-14) is the son of the superintendent and Herennius Epagathos (ll. 20-21) is attested twice as a member of the Council of 500 and belongs to a family that was prominent in second century AD Athens (see Byrne, RCA, 296-97). The other gymnasiarchs are not otherwise known. [7] When no ephebe volunteered to perform the gymnasiarchy or competition directorship, the ephebes sometimes paid the cost collectively, cf. IG II² 2024, l. 34 and 2245, l. 24. [8] For the “first enrollees” (protengraphoi) and “additional enrollees” (epengraphoi), see IG II² 2017 and AIO Papers 12 sect. 4.1. There are 53 first enrollees and 47 additional enrollees in this catalogue. Very few of the former and none of the latter are otherwise attested. [9] There are four sets of brothers in this catalogue, including one set of four (ll. 101-4). On such “ephebic twins” and “quadruplets,” see IG II² 1963 n. 2. [10] An alternative reading is "Demetrios,” see Athenian Onomasticon. [11] Quadratus was a Roman senator, resident in Athens with his son in the 130s AD and presumably granted Athenian citizenship at that time (assigned to the same deme as Emperor Hadrian). Aelius Aristides calls him a friend and rhetor (Or. 50.63). He served as consul ordinarius in 142 AD and then proconsul of Asia in 155/6 or 156/7 AD (Byrne, RCA, p. 441; R. Syme, ZPE 51, 1983, 281-82), where he was responsible for the martyrdom of the early Church father Polycarp (Martyrdom of Polycarp 9-12, 21).
