The Areopagos Council and the Council of 600 and the People (erected this herm of) Sozon son of Ladikos of Sounion, (5) doctor, having been temple attendant (zakoreusanta) of Asklepios and Hygieia^[1] in the archonship of Stratolaos (101/2), the keyholder (kleidouchountos) being Sozon (son of Sozon) of Sounion, uninscribed space (10) the manager (epimelēteuontos) being Coponius Maximus, sacred herald.^[3] phallus

[1] This portrait herm honours Sozon the temple attendant (zakoros) of the sanctuary of Asklepios on the south slope of the Acropolis (on which, see IG II³ 4, 665). On the temple attendant, see IG II³ 4, 794. It was common, as here, for the role to be held by a practicing physician (on the close relationship between doctors and the cult of Asklepios, see IG II³ 1, 914 with notes). Sozon's father and uncle appear among the ephebes victorious in a torch-race a little after 50 AD (IG II³ 4, 405). For the date of the archonship of Stratolaos, see Byrne, Roman Citizens of Athens 501-508. [2] For the keyholder and fire-bearer (kleidouchos kai pyrphoros), see SEG 18.26 with notes. In the Hellenistic period, this role was usually held by a relative of the priest; here it is instead the son of the temple attendant.
