Honours for Asylos of Steiria

IG II² 3799 Date: ca. 75-124 AD

The Areopagos Council and the Council of the 600 and the People (erected this statue of) Asylos son of Zenon of Steiria, a doctor, having been temple (5) attendant (zakoreusanta) for Asklepios.^[1]

[1] This statue base honours Asylos, the temple attendant (zakoros) of the sanctuary of Asklepios on the south slope of the Acropolis (on which, see IG II³ 4, 665). On the temple attendant, see IG II³ 4, 794. It was common, as here, for the role to be held by a practicing physician (on the close relationship between doctors and the cult of Asklepios, see IG II³ 1, 914 with notes). The inscription predates the reduction of the Council to 500 members in 124/5 AD.
