[1] This four-sided altar is decorated with cymatia. There is a relief of a gorgon’s head on its front face, below the name of the dedicator (it could also be interpreted as an image of a man crowned with ivy, cf. J. Stroszeck in J. Stroszeck, Heiligtümer im Bereich von Stadtmauern und Stadttoren, 2014, 24). A sculpted wreath is placed on each side of the altar. The findspot suggests that this inscription should be related to asmall temple in the Kerameikos near the precinct of Artemis, "to which the Athenians bring the statue of Dionysos Eleuthereus every year on assigned days" (Paus. 1.29.2). The orthography of the dedicator's name ('Eirēneou' instead of 'Eirēnaiou') suggests a date in the second century AD, cf. Threatte I, 294–296 and 297, no. 49.
