[1] The names of the honorand and the dedicator are not preserved. The market inspector (agoranomos) appears to be Herodes Atticus, the leading figure in mid-second century AD Athens (see AIUK 11 (Ashmolean), no. 15 with notes). Since the position was a junior one, this inscription should date towards the beginning of his civic career and before 125/6 AD, when he held the archonship. The text was seen inscribed on a “pedestal” just east of the Gate of Athena Archegetis (i.e. inside the Roman Agora) by the Greek epigrapher K.S. Pittakis some time before 1835 (L’ancienne Athènes, 1835, 122) and has not been seen since. It predates the Agoranomion, the office of the market inspectors, located in or near the Roman Agora (on which, see IG II² 3391 with notes), but might have been moved there after its construction.
