uninscribed space (This statue of) the one who was herald and gymnasiarch twice, and competition-director (agōnothetēsanta) of the Great Caesarea Augusta (5) and hoplite general twice, lover of Caesar and lover of the fatherland, [Claudius] Asklepiodo[ros] of Gargettos [was dedicated by] Claudia (10) . . . for her own father, to the two goddesses,^[1] [when the priestess] was Kleo [daughter of Eukles] of Phlya, [but by birth of Nikodemos] (15) [of Hermos].^[2]

[1] This fragmentary inscription derives from a statue of Claudius Asklepiodoros dedicated by his daughter to Demeter and Kore at Eleusis. He is perhaps a relative of the Menandros of Gargettos honoured by I Eleusis 333 and of the mid-1st-century AD priestess of Demeter and Kore Claudia Tatarion (I Eleusis 369). For the titles "lover of Caesar" (Philokaisar) and "lover of the fatherland" (Philopatris), see I Eleusis 348 and 503, l. 18; SEG 21.742, ll. 11-12. The stone is now heavily worn and is largely known from a transcript made by the French traveller Jacob Spon at Eleusis in 1678. The base was transported to Salamis and built into the church of the Panagia Phaneromene monastery, where Kirchner saw it in 1907 (IG II²).
