(This statue of) the high priest of Tiberius Caesar Augustus and priest of Patroos Apollo (5) Polycharmos son of Eukles of Marathon (was erected by) Himertos son of Polycharmos of Marathon, for his own benefactor, uninscribed space when the priestess was Kleo daughter of Eukles of Phlya.^[2]

[1] This is a statue for Polycharmos of Marathon, as high priest of the emperor Tiberius (r. 14 – 37 AD) and priest of Apollo Patroos. This is the first attestation of the high priesthood at Athens. At this stage, it was an additional title held by whichever priest of an imperial figure was senior, but it would evolve into a priesthood of the emperors generally under Nero (see I Eleusis 361 with notes). Polycharmos was a son of Eukles of Marathon (e.g. IG II³ 4, 12 l. 3; SEG 66.153) and an ancestor of Herodes Atticus. He was archon around 3 BC and subsequently also herald of the Areopagos (IG II² 1728, l. 6; 1730, ll. 1-3). The erector of the statue, Himertos, is perhaps an adopted son of Polycharmos, commemorating the adoption as a benefaction (Clinton). He is not otherwise attested.
