Traill, The Political Organization of Attica (1975), 29 n. 12, inferred from the demotic of the proposer (l. 1) that this was a decree of the deme Berenikidai, which was created in 224/3 BC at the same time as the tribe Ptolemais, and which he accordingly located in the area of Eleusis. It is more likely, however, to be a decree of Athenian soldiers stationed at Eleusis and/or Athenians resident there (Clinton, cf. D. Whitehead, The Demes of Attica, 1986, 392-93 no. 142 = SEG 36.194); and that Berenikidai was a deme without a physical centre. For a decree from this period of Athenians resident in Eleusis and soldiers stationed there see I Eleusis 197. The inscription was cut by Tracy's "Cutter of Agora I 7181" (ALC, 62, 67), whose dated work spans 224/3-188/7 BC (cf. Horos 26-31, 2014-19, p. 46). For the restoration of the proposer's name see SEG 32.146 (Habicht). Since his son, Xenophon, proposed decrees in the first decade of the 2nd cent. (IG II³ 1, 1246, 1263) Clinton inferred that this inscription probably dates to the earlier part of the Cutter's career. The son's funerary monument was found at Eleusis (IG II² 5888), suggesting that he resided there (Clinton suspected that this was a case of a soldier settling in a place where he had served, but it seems no less likely that the family was already resident at Eleusis at the time this decree was passed and that it was in his capacity as an Eleusinian resident that Euphantos proposed it). The honorand had apparently undertaken construction works. For the city-guardians (astynomoi) see Ath. Pol. 50.2, cf. IG II³ 1, 879, 904.
