[1] This inscription survives on two fragments of a what might have been a base or stele, with writing on both sides. Side A contains the dedication of Euphronius the potter, while side B had an epigram, most of which is lost (for this layout cf. IG I³ 695-696, 766). Euphronios was a significant early ‘pioneer’ red-figure vase painter, active from c. 520 to 500 BC. In his final decades, however, from c. 500-470, he appears to have specialised instead as a master potter, who employed other painters, including at least Onesimos, to decorate his productions. This dedication has been interpreted as a retrospective thank offering for a career of around fifty years, hence the possible reference to its function as a tithe (dekate). Such behaviour appears to have been typical of potters dedicating on the Acropolis (see notes to IG I³ 620). On dedications including occupational titles see IG I³ 546.
