Honours for the ephebic superintendent, 140/1 AD

For good fortune, in the archonship of Claudius Attalos (140/1 AD), the superintendent (kosmētēs) of the ephebes, priest of (5) the God and Goddess, Eirenaios (son of Eirenaios) of Paiania. His son, Dionysios son of Eirenaios of Paiania, (10) served as ephebe.^[1] The gymnasiarch of the ephebes for the year was Flavius Stratolaos of Phyle.^[2] There were (15) two hundred and two ephebes.^[3]

[1] This is probably an honorific herm set up for the superintendent (kosmetes) of the ephebes of 140/1 AD, by his son. The inscription appears on the front of the herm's shaft. There was usually a phallus on the front of the shaft as well, but no trace of this survives. The herm's head, now lost, would have been a portrait of the superintendent. The ephebic catalogue for this year is IG II² 2047. On these honorific herms, which were set up annually in the Diogeneion in the second and third centuries AD, see IG II² 3739 and AIO Papers 12 sect. 1.4. Eirenaios was also a member of the Council of 500 in ca. 165 AD (Agora XV 437, l. 12). His priesthood is attested only in the second century AD and was part of the Eleusinian cult. The “God and Goddess” are probably Plouton and Kore (see I Eleusis 239 and K. Clinton, Sacred Officials, 1974, 97). It was normal for the son of the superintendent to take responsibility for the herm’s erection, as Eirenaios’ son Dionysios does here. He also served as a member of the Council of 500, in the 150s AD (Agora XV 364, l. 8). [2] For the ephebic gymnasiarchs, see IG II² 1990 and AIO Papers 12 sect. 2.3. They usually served for a month each, but sometimes for multiple months or the full year, as in this case. Stratolaos was probably a grandson of the eponymous archon of 101/2 AD, also called Stratolaos, and appears in SEG 29.127 ii, l. 36 as one of the parties to a land dispute appealed to Emperor Marcus Aurelius. [3] The number is presumably mentioned as being unusually high. The average size of a cohort in the second century AD was around 160, see AIO Papers 12 sect. 1.3
