Decree 1 . . . ^[1] . . . [and he] and his descendants shall be exempt [from the recurrent?] liturgies [under the laws?]; . . . nor any of the managers (5) . . . any . . . nor . . . [put to the vote] contrary to this decree; otherwise he shall owe a thousand drachmas sacred [to Akamas: and the managers (epimelētas) of the archonship] of Nikophemos (361/0) shall inscribe this (10) decree [and stand it in the] sanctuary of Akamas: [name + demotic], Aristokrates of Thorikos, [name +] demotic.

Decree 2 In the archonship of –. - son of – of Eiresidai proposed: (15) [since the superintendent (kosmētēs)] of ephebes Autolykos has managed the young men (neaniskōn) [well and with love of honour (philotimōs)], the tribe Akamantis shall decide to praise Autolykos son of – of Thorikos for his love of honour and management of the ephebes (20) and crown him with a [foliage] crown, when [he has rendered an account of his management?], for his excellence and [orderliness; and the] . . . shall inscribe this decree on the stele in [the sanctuary of Akamas on which] is written the (25) [decree] . . . of the archonship of -.^[2]

[1] Textual note. This inscription, containing two tribal decrees of Akamantis, has recently been the subject of important studies by A. Chankowski, BCH 138 (2014), 15-78 (SEG 64.94) and Friend T1 (Decree 2 only). AIO follows Chankowski’s text of Decree 1, omitting his more speculative restorations of ll. 4-5. We follow Friend’s text of Decree 2, but without restoring the archon’s name in l. 13 ([Κτησικλέους] (334/3), Friend, or the archons of 358/7, 357/6, 350/49, 339/8 Chankowski) and l. 25 ([Κτησικλέου]ς (334/3), Friend, Μόλωνο]ς (362/1) Chankowski), or the precise wording of the inscribing clause (23, where, however, Chankowski’s restoration of the definite article with στήλην is more persuasive than previous eds. ἐ]στήλην, followed by Friend). Chankowski and Friend agree that the small fragment, EM 13354a, which contains a heading “In the archonship of Nikophemos” above an olive crown, previously thought to belong to this inscription, should be dissociated from it (photos of both fragments at Chankoswki, pp. 28-29). [2] This stele is inscribed with two apparently unrelated decrees of the tribe Akamantis (though, especially given the fragmentary character of Decree 1, there may have been a connection that is no longer apparent): Decree 1, awarding exemption from liturgies to an unknown individual (for similar awards by tribes in the early 4th cent. see IG II² 1140, and 1147); and Decree 2, honouring a superintendent (kosmetes) of ephebes, Autolykos of Thorikos, for the performance of his duties. For other decrees relating to the ephebes before 322/1 BC see RO 89 with notes. The dates of the decrees and the names of the archons to be restored in ll. 13 and 25 are uncertain. On the one hand there is a reference to the archonship of Nikophemos (361/0 BC) in Decree 1, line 9. On the other hand, decrees honouring ephebes and their officers are not otherwise known before 334/3 (cf. RO 89). Friend restores the archon in Decree 2, ll. 13 and 25 as Ktesikles (334/3). Chankowski restores l. 25 as Molon (362/1, the year before Nikophemos and understood to be the year that Decree 1 was passed) and leaves l. 13 open, while preferring an archon earlier than Ktesikles. Certainty is impossible, but the most comfortable solution on present evidence would seem to be to restore Ktesikles in l. 13, Molon in l. 25, and envisage a scenario where Decree 2, dated to 334/3, was required to be inscribed on the same stele as an earlier decree, Decree 1, which had been passed in 362/1 (archon Molon), but inscribed by the tribal managers (epimeletai) of the following year, 361/0 (archon Nikophemos).
