[1] This inscribed funerary discus for Gnathon set up by the sister who nursed him was purchased by the British Museum in 1908. It is one of a number from Archaic Athens that likely played some role at the tombs of the dead, perhaps covering offering channels or urns. They have a fairly standardised diameter, suggesting that they imitate real athletic diskoi and symbolise the athletic prowess of the dead. The lettering shows characteristic forms of the mid-sixth century BC with wagon-wheel theta, phi as a circle with a vertical line within it, epsilon with three stokes slanting downwards, three-bar sigma and alpha with a diagonal crossbar.
