[1] This tribute list appears to require an archon from the deme Skambonidai whose name has seven letters. Either Alkaios, the archon of 422/1, or Antiphon, the archon of 418/7, neither of whose demes is otherwise known, would be possible. 418/7 is preferable, since a perfect fit for the last hellenotamias named in l. 6 is provided by the hellenotamias for 418/7, Ergokles of Besa, duly a deme in tribe X (Antiochis) (see OR 170 l. 10). Moreover, the first secretary of the Council in 418/7 (IG I³ 472, l. 16) comes from the same deme as the first secretary in l. 1 and the space for the name (lost in both cases) can be reconstructed to be identical. AIO's text follows IG, but omits most of the speculative restorations of quotas. [2] In ca. 425/4 Athens had demanded massively increased tribute from her allies (IG I³ 34). Unfortunately evidence as to what happened next as regards tribute is thin on the ground. IG I³ 77 is a fragmentary tribute reassessment list which dates probably to 422/1 or 418/7 (for a critical discussion of the date see L. Kallet, Hesperia 73, 2004, 466-68). Unfortunately where both figures and names are preserved in IG I³ 77 they do not survive in the 425 assessment, with the partial exception of the Aktaian city, Antandros, and the Hellespontine total. In 425 Antandros was assessed at 15 tal.; in IG I³ 77, col. 4, l. 15, the figure could be 4 tal., 8 tal., 13 tal. or 17 tal. The total for the Hellespontine region in 425 was in excess of 250 tal.; in IG I³ 77, col. 4, l. 13, the figure was at least 96 tal., but is more probably 196 tal. and might be 296 tal. There is also a run of figures for cities in the Thraceward region in the 425 assessment where the names of the cities are not preserved, but which matches exactly the run of figures for Herakleion (1,000 dr.), the Singians, the Mekybernians, the Galaians (10 dr. each), Traïlos (1 tal.) and Bormiskos (1,000 dr.) in the later list. If these figures in 425 are indeed the figures for those cities then their tribute was unchanged in the later assessment. There is not enough evidence here to support any inference as to a general shift in overall tribute levels between 425 and IG I³ 77. The state of preservation of our list also precludes firm general inferences. Sombia (col. 2, l. 21) can plausibly be restored here as paying a 1/60 quota of 66 dr. 4 ob., representing a tribute of 4,000 dr., exactly the sum preserved in IG I³ 77, col. 4, l. 3. Kyzikos pays 2,000 dr. of quota (= 20 tal. tribute), when in the 430s she had paid 9 tal. tribute; Sigeion moves from a 430s tribute level of 1,000 dr. to 1 tal. (quota 100 dr.). In 421 BC revolting allies returned to Athenian control under the Peace of Nikias were notionally required to pay tribute at the original level set by Aristeides in 478 BC (Thuc. 5.18.5). There is nothing in the tribute lists that can be correlated with that; and such slight evidence as there is for the general picture suggests maintenance of tribute in IG I³ 77 and in our inscription at around the same level as in 425 or at least at higher levels than the 430s.
