Euphrosynos son of the hierophant, being temple attendant (zakoreuōn) of Asklepios and Hygieia (5) dedicated the porch (pronaon) and the building (oikon), in the archonship of Kallikratides.^[1]

[1] This plaque commemorates the erection or repair of a temple building in the Asklepieion at Eleusis, on which see IG II³ 4, 891 with note. The temple attendant (zakoros) was responsible for the day-to-day operation of a sanctuary and became a prestigious post in the Imperial period. This is the only attestation of the office at the Eleusinian Asklepieion, but on the post as the Asklepieion on the south slope of the Acropolis, see IG II³ 4, 794. Euphrosynos’ donations show that he was wealthy and as son of the hierophant he belonged to the Eumolpidai, one of the two gene which held the chief male priesthoods of the Eleusinian Mysteries. On the close ties between the Eleusinian cult and Asklepios see IG II³ 4, 810 and 1051. The prominence of the temple attendant and the use of hieronymy suggest a post-Augustan date. In this period, there were archons named Kallikratides in 25/6 AD and 40-52 AD (see Schmalz).
