[1] This epistyle derives from a dedication in the Asklepieion on the south slope of the Acropolis (on which, see IG II³ 4, 665). Legal guardians (kyrioi) were the heads of household, who controlled dependents (children, women, and slaves), but only slaves are likely to have identified them as such, since children and women would probably refer to them using kinship terms.
