[1] This statue base was dedicated in the Asklepieion on the south slope of the Acropolis (on which, see IG II³ 4, 665). The upper portion (ll. 1-7) is in Greek; the second part is in Latin. The dedicator is perhaps to be identified with Aufidius Bassus, a Roman historian of the first century AD, whose works survive only in fragments (cf. T. J. Cornell, The Fragments of the Roman Historians I, pp. 518-21, no.78). Seneca the Younger notes that he was "always physically unwell" (Ep. 30.1). For the date, see G. The Latin inscription renders the Greek Hygieia (literally "Health") with the Latin Valetudo ("Health"). The mason made several errors in the Latin names of the two gods that suggest that he was closely following a manuscript written in Latin cursive letters which he did not understand.
