[1] This is the triangular marble base for an incense burner (thymiaterion), which was dedicated in the Asklepieion on the south slope of the Acropolis (on which, see IG II³ 4, 665). This is a rare Classical example of the type, which only becomes common in the late Hellenistic and Imperial periods. Three fragments survive, which derive from the lower (fr. a), middle (fr. b), and upper (fr. c) parts of the object. The inscription appears on the right face of fr. c. The left face of fragments b and c has a relief, depicting a woman at left (Antikleia?) holding her hands one above the other with her thumbs hidden – a gesture of prayer. At right is Asklepios, who holds a stick with a snake wound around it, point down to the ground, and hands the woman a cup, presumably containing medicine (cf. IG II³ 4, 729). The date is based on the style of the relief sculpture (A. Kosmopoulou, The Iconography of Sculptured Statue Bases, 2002, 191-192). There is a circular depression on top, in which the actual incense burner sat. For the reconstruction of the fragments, including a good composite image, see L.
