[1] On the introduction of the “competition-director” (agonothetes) in or shortly before 307/6 BC see IG II³ 4, 518, with notes. That monument commemorated the agonothesia of [Androkles?] of Sphettos that year in the competitions in tragedies and comedies at the City Dionysia or the Lenaia. This one commemorated the agonothesia of his brother, Xenokles, in the same or a slightly later year, for the dithyrambic competition. The fact that the competition was organised by single tribes (l. 6) rather than pairs of tribes, implies that the festival was the City Dionysia. The victorious tribe in the men’s competition was the newly minted Demetrias (l. 6), the name of which was erased over a century later on the damnatio memoriae of the Antigonids in 200 BC. [2] On the career of the wealthy and prominent Xenokles of Sphettos see IG II³ 4, 212; I Eleusis 87; I Eleusis 95. His last known action, in 306/5 BC, when over 70, was to bring Antigonos' subvention of 140 tal. to Athens (IG II² 1492, l. 100, cf. APF p. 415).
