[1] This inscription commemorates an act of euergetism at a temple of Athena in Myrrhinous by the most prominent Athenian, and one of the wealthiest Romans, of the second century AD, the sophist Herodes Atticus (lived 101-177 AD; cf. AIUK vol. 4.5, no. 27; AIUK vol. 11, pp. 114-16). On the inscriptions of Myrrhinous, whose principal deity, Artemis Kolainis, was actively cultivated at this period, see IG II² 1182, with notes; IG II³ 4, 1099, 1103. There is no other evidence for a temple of Athena in Myrrhinous. Cf. J. Tobin, Herodes Attikos and the City of Athens (1997), p. 281; Bultrighini, who notes that, while possible, it is uncertain whether the temple was located at the site of the church where this inscription was found (together with many other ancient materials). Characteristically of inscriptions of Herodes Atticus, the text contains two archaisms, νεὼν = (acc.) temple and Ἀθηναίᾳ = (dat.) Athena, cf. Threatte, Grammar I 274, II 42.
