Text I (in Greek) in crown The sailors in the sacred ships (honoured) the general in charge of the fleet (5) and the trierarchs with a golden crown.^[1] Text II (in Latin) Our Lords Arcadius and Honorius (erected this) [in the time of the most brilliant] (5)and prominent man (viro clarissimo et spectabili) [proconsul] Eusebius uninscribed space (in Greek) [6 (miles).]^[2]

Text I, the original inscription, records the crowning of the general in charge of the fleet and the trierarchs by the sailors of the sacred ships (the Paralos, Ammonias, Antigonis, Demetrias, and Ptolemais, cf. W. Bubelis, Historia 59, 2010, 385–411). For the general in charge of the fleet, see Ath. Pol. 61.4 and IG II³ 4, 8 with notes. Perhaps the names of the honorands appeared below the wreath and were obliterated by Text II. [2] The second inscription, in Latin, belongs to the block’s reuse as part of a set of milestones erected around 397 AD (see IG II² 5, 13295 with notes; on milestones generally, see IG II² 5, 13294 with notes). The findspot at Dafni suggests that this stone stood on the Sacred Way, the road from Athens to Eleusis. Two other milestones (IG II² 5, 13295 and 13298) were found in the same place. At a later point, a cross has been carved through the middle of this inscription.
