[1] This inscription is on a short end of a funerary trapeza (or mensa), a large rectangular table-like monument found at Athens from the 4^thcent. BC onwards. The deceased was from the deme Berenikidai, named after Queen Berenike II, wife of Ptolemy III Euergetes of Egypt, which was allocated to the new tribe Ptolemais established in his honour in 224/3 BC.

This is one of several large funerary monuments found built into the third-century AD reconstruction of the Athenian fortification wall on Dipylou Street immediately northeast of the Kerameikos archaeological site (See Mapping Ancient Athens, no. 736). Other inscriptions found in the same excavation are the trapezai IG II² 5916, 8398, 10291, 10292, and stele IG II² 11390/1. The inscription is now located on the Kolonos Agoraios, east of the Agora, where it now supports an entirely unrelated sculpture of a leopard (Ag. S 3452 = Agora XXXV 217).
