[1] This is a trapeza (or mensa), a large rectangular table-like monument found at Athens from the 4^thcent. BC onwards. It commemorates Aischylos from Kale Akte, a city on the northern shore of Sicily at modern Marina di Caronia. The ethnic used here, Sikelos, was originally reserved for the Sicels, the indigenous inhabitants of eastern Sicily, while Sikeliotes was used for inhabitants of the Greek communities in Sicily. The two terms merged in the Hellenistic period. The appearance of an island and polis ethnic for Sicilians is common abroad after the Classical period, see AIUK 4.6 (BM, funerary), no. 38 and J. Prag in P. Martzavou and N. Papazarkadas, Epigraphical Approaches to the Post-Classical Polis (2013), 37-53. This inscription was excavated along with a group of funerary monuments northeast of the Kerameikos site (see IG II² 5889 with notes).
