[1] This decree fragment from the early fourth century BC is among the inscriptions acquired in Athens by Lord Elgin (cf. AIUK 4.1, no. 2). Like some other inscribed decrees of the early fourth century, it is a resolution of the Council alone. At this period this tended to occur in one of two circumstances: when the Council was ordering the re-inscription of decrees destroyed by the Thirty, cf. OR 177B, IG I³ 98; or when the "decree" was actually the Council's proposal (probouleuma), in which case it was ratified or amended by a decree of the Assembly inscribed further down the stone, cf. IG II² 18. This inscription might belong in the former category. There are possible indications that the surface of the stele was cut back and re-inscribed. It may be significant that Argos, with Boeotia and Corinth, was one of Athens' allies against Sparta in the Corinthian War (cf. RO 6). For more detailed discussion of the decree see AIUK 4.2, no. 8.
