Statue of Claudia Athenais erected by her father’s student

IG II² 4073 Date: ca. 160 AD

The Areopagos Council having decreed it, (this statue of) Marcia (5) Athenais, daughter of Claudius Herodes, (was erected by) Flavius Macer for his friend and teacher’s daughter, the temple attendant (zakoreuontos) being Eudemos (10) son of Hermeias of Gargettos, the deputy temple attendant (hupozakoreuontos) being Euangellos son of Demetrios of Gargettos.^[2]

[1] This base was erected in the sanctuary of Asklepios on the south slope of the Acropolis (on which, see IG II³ 4, 665) by one of the students of Herodes Atticus to commemorate his deceased daughter Athenais. Another student erected IG II² 4074 for Athenais at the same time. On Herodes Atticus and his notoriously public grief at the death of his relatives and dependents, see AIUK 11 (Ashmolean), no. 15 with notes. There is a square cutting on top for the insertion of a marble statue. [2] On the temple attendant (zakoros), see IG II³ 4, 794 with notes. This is the only attestation of his deputy (perhaps a relative).
