[1] Textual note: K. Clinton, Sacred Officials, 1974, 41 and Byrne, Roman Citizens, 2003, 15 propose to read l. 2 as [Π. Αἰλίον] Ἀπολλώνιο[ν Ἀπολλωνιου] (“[Publius Aelius] Apollonios [son of Apollonios]").

This is one of a number of Imperial-period honorific monuments for philosophers and authors found in the area around the sanctuary of Asklepios on the south slope of the Acropolis (on which, see IG II³ 4, 665). The honorand of this statue base is probably to be identified with Publius Aelius Apollonios, who held the chair of oratory at Athens and was hierophant in the early third century AD (I Eleusis 637, Philostr. Vit. Soph. 2.20, cf. Byrne 15-16 with further references), but Apollonios of Naukratis (Philostr. Vit. Soph. 2.26) or another otherwise unknown sophist Apollonios are also possibilities.
