With good fortune, uninscribed space in accordance with a memorandum (hupomnēmatismon) of the Council of the Areopagos (5)(this statue was erected of) Gaius Julius Sabinus, Platonic philosopher.^[1]

[1] This herm is one of several honouring philosophers and authors found in the area of the sanctuary of Asklepios on the south slope of the Acropolis (on which, see IG II³ 4, 665). Lucian’s Apology is addressed to (and features a speech by) an old friend of his called Sabinus, a “good and philosophical man” (2-7, 15), who might be the same man as the honorand of this herm (J. H. Oliver, The Athenian Expounders of the Sacred and Ancestral Law, 1950, 160). The herm is missing its head.
