[1] This is the base for a less than life-size statue. It was found built into the tower of the Post-Herulian wall which became the church of Panagia Pyrgiotissa (i.e. in the Athenian Agora, south of the Stoa of Attalos). The earlier inscription, which has been erased to make way for the later one appears to be a private dedication or a privately erected honorific statue base from sometime between the 4th and 1st centuries BC. [2] The later inscription commemorates Lucius Caesar (17 BC – 2 AD), the grandson and adoptive heir of Augustus (see IG II² 3251 with notes). The association (koinon) of Leontideans seem to be the Athenian tribe of Leontis (or a subset thereof), who had a headquarters just north of the Athenian Agora (J. McK. Camp, Hesperia 89, 2020, 640), from which this base might have derived. In SEG 66.153 from the same period they are "those sharing in (the tribe of) Leontidians." The reference to the tribe as a koinon is paralleled in the early Imperial period by IG II³ 4, 242, in which the deme of Acharnai appears as such.
