[1] This pillar derives from the sanctuary of Asklepios on the south slope of the Acropolis (on which, see IG II³ 4, 665). It seems to have originally been set up as a dedication by the son of Nikostratos in the priesthood of Phanostratos (date unknown). In 109/8 BC, the priest Nikodoros added his name to the stem of the pillar (ll. 5-8), evidently intending for it to become an ongoing catalogue of the priests. The priests of Asklepios served annually and the position cycled through the Athenian tribes; Nikodoros was the first priest of a new cycle. Along with the archon lists IG II² 1713 and 1716, the inscription is an important source for first century BC Athenian chronology. For some reason, most of Nikodoros' successors did not add their own names, which decreases the inscription's utility. [2] Philemon (l. 9) should date to 104/3 or 92/1 BC. Embios, whose name is inscribed in very large letters might date to 93/2 or 83/2 BC (ll. 10-13). [3] The date of Menandros’ priesthood (ll. 14-17) indicates that the tribal cycle had been restarted in 87/6 BC following the Sullan Sack of Athens. For the keyholder and fire-bearer (kleidouchos kai pyrphoros), see SEG 18.26 with notes. They are usually, as here, sons or young relatives of the priest. [4] Ameipsas (ll. 18-19) should be the priest of 72/1 BC. The double erasure of his name (ll. 18 and 20, while carefully preserving his son's name) must indicate some kind of damnatio memoriae, but we know nothing of the circumstances (on erasure and memory in Athenian history, see E. Culasso Gastaldi, AIO Papers 2). Apollodoros (ll. 23-24) should be the priest of 66/5 BC and Sokrates (ll. 25-26) the priest of 63/2 BC. The latter also appears in IG II³ 780, recording construction work he carried out in the sanctuary.
