[1] This funerary monument ("stele") commemorating two men named Demochares and Hegelochos depicts in relief a vase known as a "loutrophoros". In life this type of vessel was used in wedding ritual and on a funerary monument it signified that the deceased had died unmarried. The names are inscribed on the upper part of the vessel and will have functioned as labels for painted figures representing the two men. The painting no longer survives, but there is a space in the middle of the name "Hegelochos" which probably accommodated the top of his head. The two men were probably related and may well have been depicted shaking hands ("dexiosis"), a common gesture of intimacy on Athenian funerary monuments. The stele can be dated by the style of its sculpture and lettering to ca. 400-350 BC. For a fuller discussion of this monument see AIUK 6 (Leeds City Museum), no. 1.
