Dedication to Athena by Peikon the potter

Peikon, the potter (kerameus), having made a vow, dedicated this as a tithe (dekatē) (5) to Athena. ^[1]

[1] This inscription survives on one side of a small square column capital (some traces of the column itself survive on its base). The top of the capital has been hollowed out to support an offering, perhaps a bronze statuette. Peikon the potter is otherwise unknown and does not appear to have signed any vases. He may be the dedicator of another similar offering (IG I³ 843) from the first quarter of the fifth century. The Greek text is metrical but the precise meter is uncertain: it appears to be an hexameter with two extra feet provided by the addition of the final word ‘to Athena’. It has been suggested that this may be understood as "an Alkmanic period" (C. Gallavotti, Metri e ritmi nelle iscrizioni greche, 1979, 22).
