[1] This is the marker (horos) of a house used as security for a loan (prasis epi lysei) from the deme Kerameis to an unknown individual (most likely a demesman of Kerameis; to judge by its findspot, the house to which it related was in or not far from the deme). On the nature of the transaction and other horoi marking loans by demes and other collectives of citizens see Agora XIX H84.

This is the only extant inscription documenting a collective action of Kerameis, a medium-sized deme of the city trittys of Akamantis (bouleutic quota 6) located in the area to the west and north-west of the Agora, inside and outside the Dipylon Gate (for this location see the works cited by Humphreys, Kinship, 965 n. 1). Home to the potters' quarter (from which its name derives) and the Kerameikos cemetery, it was described by Thucydides 2.34.5 as "the most beautiful suburb (proasteion) of the city" (cf.
