[1] This is a catalogue of paianistai, singers of paians (a type of hymn) from the sanctuary of Asklepios on the south slope of the Acropolis (on which, see IG II³ 4, 665). Many of the singers are identifiable as members of the highest rungs of Athenian society. Another catalogue of paianistai appears on IG II³ 4, 850 (ca. 205 AD). Ulpius Dionysios, Onesimos, Avienius Cerealius, Memmius Ptolemaios, and Eutychides (ll. 10, 18-19, 21, 25) appear in both lists, indicating that they date to roughly the same period. Other prosopographic indications suggest a date c. 190-200 AD (Aleshire, Asklepios, 36-38). Another catalogue of paianistai from the Asklepieion at Zea dates to 215/6 AD (IG II² 2963). Six inscriptions from the late Hellenistic and Imperial periods record paians for Asklepios (IG II³ 4, 777, 817, 837, 846, 849-852, 857). A separate group of Paianistai dedicated IG II³ 663 at the Piraeus in the same period. [2] On the temple attendant (zakoros), see IG II³ 4, 794. For the keyholder and fire-bearer (kleidouchos kai pyrphoros), see SEG 18.26 with notes. The “envoys” (presbeis) are not otherwise known. [3] Pompeius or Pomponius Hegias of Phaleron (l. 13) held various important posts, including the archonship and hoplite generalship ca. 200 (IG II² 3687). [4] Oufentina was one of the Roman tribes, which formed the voting blocs of the comitia tributa, which had elected Roman magistracies and passed laws during the Roman Republic. In the Imperial period, membership of a Roman tribe merely served as an extra marker of Roman citizenship (L. Ross Taylor, The Voting Districts of the Roman Republic, 1960). Oufentina was originally associated with Privernum and Tarracina on the River Ufens in southern Latium, later also Frusino, also in Latium; Forum Flaminii and Plestia in Umbria; and Comum and Mediolanum (Milan) in Transpadana, Cerealis is thus likely to have had roots in central or northern Italy. The tribal name is given in the form of a monogram (a circle with a vertical line through the middle, topped by a V).
