[1] This small funerary stele is among the inscriptions acquired in Athens by Lord Elgin (cf. AIUK 4.1, no. 2). It commemorates Kointos, a Hellenised version of the Roman name Quintus, which reflects a trend for Athenian citizens to be given Roman names from the late Hellenistic period onwards (see the note on IG II³ 4, 275). The location of the family deme Tyrmeidai is unknown. The inclusion of the age of the deceased is also a phenomenon influenced by Roman practice, which in Athens is found particularly from the second century AD and principally on the gravestones of those who died young, typically children and young men up to their early 20s.
