[1] This is one of a number of dedications in the British Museum to Zeus Hypsistos (“Zeus The All High”) deriving from the Earl of Aberdeen’s excavation in 1803 of the former meeting place of the Athenian Assembly on the Pnyx. For other such dedications see AIUK 4.5 no. 13, with notes. Many of them take the form of anatomical votives. This example consists of only a plain tablet with inscription, with no sculpted relief of an anatomical part (cf. AIUK 4.5 no. 23); it is possible, however, that there was originally a relief on the upper part of the tablet, which has now been lost. This dedication is notable for its use of the term “thank-offering” (charistērion), which makes it explicit that thanks were being offered to the god for help already received (cf. AIUK 4.5 no. 19, IG II³ 4, 1250). The word “vow” (euchē) is more common in this form of dedication, but is also more ambiguous as to whether it seeks or follows the intervention of the god.
