[1] The content of this fragment suits a law and similarities in the style of the writing and layout, as well as features of the text, have led it to be identified as part of the same law on the trierarchy as IG I³ 236a. That is possible, and would be consistent with the restoration “[trier]arch” in ll. 9-10. One of the many other official titles in -arch (e.g. demarch, polemarch) is also possible, however, and the previous reading of l. 12 to yield a reference to wood (chsul-) is not persuasive (cf. Lambert, ZPE 148, 2004, 182-3 = SEG 54.54). Instead we probably have two references to synegoroi, "supporting speakers", i.e. speakers in legal cases who supported the plaintiff or defendant (see L. Rubinstein, Litigation and Cooperation: Supporting Speakers in the Courts of Classical Athens, 2000; they could also sometimes be publicly appointed, as e.g. in the fourth-century legislative process, Dem. 24.36; 20.146). If this fragment did relate to the trierarchy it may have been from a separate stele from 236a (cf. R. A. Moysey, ZPE 78, 1989, 201-4 = SEG 39.18).
