(This statue of) Argaios son of Argaios of Plotheia was dedicated by Batakes son of Batakes of Piraeus, having been tended (therapeutheis) by him.^[1] Demetrios son of Philon of Ptelea made it.^[2]

[1] Argaios was a doctor, as we learn from another inscription found in the same area, which may have been part of the same base (IG II² 3783). It seems that Batakes had been one of his patients. The latter's name, not otherwise encountered in Attica, is associated with the Black Sea and northwestern Anatolia, so it is likely that he was a foreigner who had received Athenian citizenship. Perhaps he is to be identified with Batakes of Nikaia, a student of the second-century BC Academic philosopher, Karneades (cf. Philodemos in P. Herc. 1021 col. 49, ll. 36; W. Croenert, Sitzungsberichte der Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften 34, 1904, 480; contra M. Haake, Der Philosoph in der Stadt, 2007, 287-88). The base was incorporated into the section of the Post-Herulian Wall east of the Tower of the Winds. It has been suggested that it should be associated with a hypothetical sanctuary of Asklepios in the nearby Diogeneion, the main gymnasium of Athens by this period (see IG II² 4 871 with notes). [2] The sculptor Demetrios of Ptelea (DNO 3694-3698), who is known solely from inscriptions, was active in the second half of the second century BC in Athens, Messene, and perhaps Chios.
