[1] Textual Note. Except as noted below, we follow the text of the provisional publication of this inscription by J. McK.Camp II, Hesperia 89, 2020, 593-657 at 633-649 (text at 641-2) (SEG 66.141). It is the earlier inscription on a block which was reused after 9 BC as a statue base of Eukles son of Herodes of Marathon (= SEG 66.153). "At the time of writing the block was still embedded in the wall [of the basin] and not all surfaces could be thoroughly studied" (Camp). 5 Apart from [Dem]ostratos, [Nik]ostratos, [Phan]ostratos, [Tim]ostratos and [Phil]ostratos are also possible, though none of the names is otherwise attested in Phrearrhioi. No name in Ato- is attested in Attica (Ἀτθ- ?). 6 No name is attested in Thrasch- (ΘΡΑΣΧ-), so perhaps this is rather Thrasy- (ΘΡΑΣΥ̣-). A Thrasykles son of Thrason is attested in Phrearrhioi in 324/3 BC, I Orop 353 A 16.

This inscription was discovered together with a iv BC dedication to the hero Leos by the epimeletai ("managers") of the tribe Leontis (Ag. I 7665; Camp, 642-44) built into a basin or tank of Roman imperial date, adjacent to a much older enclosure from which the inscriptions appear to derive, and identified by the excavator accordingly as the tribal sanctuary of Leos. The text has yet to be completely read, but it is identified persuasively by Camp on the basis of preliminary readings as a prytany dedication of Leontis, perhaps datable to 335/4 BC. On this genre of inscription see IG I³ 515, with notes. The inscription begins with a list of at least 8 men from the deme Phrearrhioi, which is consistent with that deme's bouleutic quota of 9 at this period (cf. AIO 2776, with notes). Agora XV 43 lists some of the councillors of Leontis in 335/4 BC, but these do not include those from Phrearrhioi, so there is no inconsistency with dating this inscription to the same year. The first-listed demesman, Themistokles son of Polyarchos, is a descendant of the well-known Themistokles of the early 5th cent. BC, cf. Paus. 1.37.1 and for other references to family members see the Athenian Onomasticon.
