Dedication by troops at Rhamnous honouring the general, Phoxias of Perithoidai

IG II³ 4 299 Date: 250-200 BC

The soldiers, the hidden agents (kruptoi) and the select associates (prosairetoi),^[1] dedicated (this), having crowned the general Phoxias son of Leosthenes of Perithoidai for his excellence (aretēs) and justice (dikaiosunēs).

[1] The “hidden agents” (kruptoi) were stationed in lookouts in the countryside to ensure a quick response to threats to the harvest (see I Rhamn. 3 and 20; G. J. Oliver, War, Food, and Politics in Early Hellenistic Athens, 2007, 139). This is the only attestation of the "select associates" (prosairetoi); they may be auxiliary troops or assistants chosen by the general (cf. Xen. Hipparch. 1.8). Phoxias of Perithoidai was honoured in ca. 225 BC by the decrees SEG 51.115 and 118. There is a square socket for a dedication on the upper surface of the base; another square socket for a large votive on the bottom surface derives from an earlier use of the block.
