[1] Like IG II³ 4, 433 (q.v.), this is a choregic dedication commemorating victory in the military dance (pyrrhiche) at the Panathenaia. Also like that dedication the identification of the event is not implied by surviving text, but by (fragmentarily preserved) relief depicting the armed dancers. It has been suggested, plausibly, but uncertainly given that no patronymic or demotic is preserved, that the sponsor was the very wealthy and prominent figure of late-4th cent. Athens, Xenokles son of Xeinis of Sphettos, on whom see IG II³ 4, 212, with notes. Two (non-joining) fragments survive; the working of the back of the monument suggests that there was another adjoining block. For a third extant dedication from the pyrrhiche see IG II³ 4, 435.
