[1] On the deme Athmonon and its inscriptions, see IG II² 1203, with notes. This list of contributors from the area of the deme is datable to ca. early 4th cent. BC. Hierokles son of Archestratos of Athmonon (30) was deputy to the Hellenotamiai in 418/7 BC, OR 170; and Phalanthos son of Demetrios (10) was perhaps father of the Smikythion son of Phalanthos of A. who was one of the merarchai of the deme in 325/4 BC (IG II² 1203, ll. 12-13). The body that set up the inscription is usually (and plausibly) identified as the deme, though Lambert, ZPE 125 (1999), 121 n. 27 noted that this is not certain. Only ca. 7 of the men listed are attested elsewhere as demesmen of Athmonon; and there was at least one other formal group based in that deme (see the notes to IG II² 1203). The purpose of the contributions is unknown. Whitehead, Demes of Attica (1986), 359, suggested reconstruction in the wake of the Peloponnesian War.

Family connections are apparent between men on different parts of the list, e.g. Euthydemos (16) and Euthydikos (4) sons of Akesandros seem to be brothers. The two men named Thougeiton son of Theodoros (6, 35) are perhaps grandfather and grandson, and the latter is probably brother of Ameinias son of Theodoros (34). Pistokles son of Pistias (21) is related to Pistias son of Kothon (27); and though the name Kallias is common there might be a connection between Kallias son of Apollodoros (22), Euxitheos son of Kallias (25) and Lysimachides son of Kallias (29). But overall, as Whitehead, 240, n. 74, noted, relatively few of the listed men are identifiable in other evidence, suggesting that, whatever the purpose of the list was, it extended further down the socio-economic scale than for example IG II³ 4, 223, recording demesmen of Halai Aixonides who had contributed to a new statue of Aphrodite, the majority of whom are more or less well-known (on the prosopography of the men on our list see Whitehead, 421-25; Humphreys, Kinship, 1057-67). The name of the father of Kollytides (18), Medimachos ("Mede-Fighter"), is clearly significant for a man who must have been born ca. mid-5th cent. BC, a case of politically programmatic naming of which there are other examples at this period. See W. Judeich, in Epitymbion H. Swoboda dargebracht (1927), 99-106; Lambert, in R. Parker ed., Changing Names (2019), 164-5. This man is not otherwise identifiable. Twice men are listed as having contributed on behalf of someone else (the men in ll. 3-4 on behalf of a man whose name is missing at the top; the three men named without patronymics in l. 15 on behalf of Isotimides son of Smikrias. The names of two of the substitutes, Isokles and Smikrion, suggest a family connection with Isotimides; perhaps all three were simply his sons, cf. Humphreys, 1061). It is not clear whether all members were required to contribute. Lambert, ZPE 125 (1999), 121 n. 27 (SEG 47.189) noted that the number in the list (ca. 36) could represent about a sixth of the members of this deme and raised the possibility that this was the membership of one of the six deme "sections" attested by IG II² 1203.
