[1] This is part of a set of Roman Imperial-period milestones in the shape of herms (see I Eleusis 647 with notes). Four Roman miles is ca. 5.9 kilometres, but this stone, like SEG 44.173, was found on the island of Agios Georgios, between Salamis and the mainland, well over 15 kilometres from the city of Athens. It must have been brought to the island as building material. The head is lost, but traces of long ringlets, like those on I Eleusis 647 are visible on the chest.
