[1] This rupestral boundary marker (horos), inscribed on a loose flat slab southeast of Sphendouri in the south of Aigina, is one of 18 engraved around Aigina in the second half of the fifth century BC (IG IV² 2, 792-804, 1074, SEG 59.347-350). For details on the function, dating, and authorship of these inscriptions, see IG IV² 2, 803 with notes. Given this inscription’s situation on a rocky outcrop, with a wide viewshed over the Saronic gulf, Polinskaya, Hesperia 78, 2009, 231-67, argues that this precinct at Sphendouri served a strategic military function for the Athenian cleruchs as well.
