[1] For an introduction to this genre of inscriptions, see Meyer, Metics, no. 1 with notes. The stele employs the “reversed entry format,” on which see Meyer, Metics, nos. 2-9 n. 10. Subsequent to Meyer’s (Metics) re-edition of the corpus of phialai inscriptions, Malouchou (Two Overlooked Attic Inscriptions) identified this additional fragment belonging to the same series of documents (= SEG 60.196). First published by Pittakis in 1860, the present text was never included in IG volumes, nor was it recognized as one of the Attic manumission inscriptions; Pittakis identified it as a decree. The stone was subsequently reported lost, but Malouchou discovered a second transcription of the text, made by P. Eustratiades in 1864 and housed at the Archive of the Archaeological Society at Athens. By comparing the two paper versions of the inscription, Malouchou identified the text as one of the phialai inscriptions, and later confirmed this upon locating the stone at the Epigraphical Museum (Malouchou, Two Overlooked Attic Inscriptions, pp. 202-207, 214-15). Lines 19 and 23 are inscribed in an erasure.
