(This statue of) the high priest of the Augusti Tiberius Claudius Attikos Herodes of Marathon, the tribe of Ptolemais dedicated (5) on account of his goodwill (eunoias) and beneficence towards his fatherland.^[1]

[1] This fragment of a statue base was part of a set erected in the Agora by the Athenian tribes in honour of Tiberius Claudius Attikos, the father of Herodes Atticus. Five bases survive, erected by the tribes of Ptolemais, Oineis, Kekropis, Antiochis, and Aiantis (IG II² 3597b-d and Leone, Polis, Platz und Porträt, no. 79; IG II² 3597e is probably unrelated), as well as one base erected by Pandionis for Attikos’ wife Vibullia Alkia (IG II² 4063). A pair of statues, one for Attikos and one for Alkia, was probably erected by each of the twelve tribes (or thirteen tribes, if they were set up after the creation of Hadrianis in 124/5 AD). The fact that most of the bases were found together within the Church of Panagia Pyrgiotissa (at the south end of the Stoa of Attalos) suggests that they stood together in the Agora, perhaps juxtaposed with the monument of the Eponymous Heroes. The erection of the statues was probably prompted by Attikos and Alkia’s establishment of a system to fund the sacrifices of the tribal prytaneis (see Agora XV 322 with notes). On these statues, see S. Leone ASAtene 96, 2018, 325-38. The erection of multiple statues was an established honour in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The demes (and other entities?) erected 300 or 360 statues for Demetrios of Phaleron between 317 and 307 BC (SEG 25.206 with note), the Areopagos, Council, and People erected statues throughout the city for Julius Nikanor in the early first century AD (see IG II² 1069 with notes) and for Q. Trebellius Rufus ca. 90 AD (Agora XVIII 398), and each of the tribes erected a set of statues for Hadrian in the Theatre of Dioynsos around the same time as this set of statues were set up (IG II² 3287a-d).
