[1] Textual note: Alternative restorations of the name of the goddess include: Panakeia, Teleia (J. Bingen in Thorikos V, pp. 149-50), and Iphigeneia (S. C. Humphreys, ZPE 160, 2007, 66 n. 12).

The inscription is on a polished section of an otherwise rough-picked plaque, which may have been the front of a statue base or an architectural element. It is broken at left, shows signs of fire damage, and was found in a mid-fourth century BC destruction layer. The findspot is just east of Insula 10, a sanctuary consisting of a double shrine and a large hall, which was active ca. 500-350 BC, within the industrial quarter of Thorikos. On this structure, cf. H. Mussche, H. Bussers, and J. Bingen, Thorikos V, pp. 103-150. On the basis of this inscription, the presence of uninscribed anatomical votives, and an interpretation of the hall as a space for incubation healing, Mussche identified this as an Asklepieion. But there are other possible reconstructions of the goddess’ name (see textual note). Since Asklepios and Hygieia only arrived in Athens in 420/19 BC (see IG II³ 4, 665 with notes), they probably shared the sanctuary at Thorikos with a pre-existing healing cult (cf. IG II³ 4, 902 on the sanctuary of Amynos and Asklepios). Three horoi are carved into the living rock to the north of this sanctuary (Thorikos V, no. 3-5), but probably do not relate to this structure. On the deme Thorikos, see AIO 847 with notes.

The dedicator was likely called something like Anthylla or Philylla. Her deme, Poros, probably neighboured Thorikos and belonged to the same tribe.
