[1] This block was dedicated in the Asklepieion on the south slope of the Acropolis (on which, see IG II³ 4, 665). It bears a series of dedicatory inscriptions, added sequentially between the late fourth century BC and the first century AD (it is possible that inscriptions I and III are part of the same original text). Originally, the block was a rectangular pillar and the first three inscriptions were carved on its front face, in the first half of the third century BC. The fourth inscription was inscribed on the back in the third or second centuries BC. In the first century AD, the pillar was reused as an architrave block, with the fifth inscription on what had previously been the right-hand side of the pillar, but was now the front of the architrave. Two holes were cut in the original front face of the pillar to fix it in its place as an architrave block.

The second dedicator of the first inscription, Lysandrides, was father of a Lysanias, who was ephebe in 266/5 BC and a councillor c. 255-245 BC (IG II³ 1, 917, l. 83; IG II³ 1, 1030, l. 34) and thus born c. 285 BC; Lysandrides should therefore have been born c. 315 BC or earlier. Kallias might be attested as a horseman ca. 280 BC (K. Braun, Ath. Mitt. 85, 1970, 247). The other dedicators are unknown. [2] The ‘servant’ (leitourgos) is probably one of the public slaves; the term is used in place of ‘slave’ (doulos) from the late first century BC onwards (see SEG 28.95 with note). Alternatively, he might be an otherwise unknown official of the Asklepieion.
