[1] This base bore statues of the heroes Machaon and Podaleirios, sons of the god Asklepios, who participated in the Trojan War as healers and military leaders (cf. Iliad 2.730-34, 4.193-219; IG II³ 4, 777). The dedication was purchased in Athens in the 19^th century and its findspot is unrecorded, but it must have come from the sanctuary of Asklepios on the south slope of the Acropolis, since the priest Menestratos also appears in IG II³ 4, 684.
