[1] There is a cutting in the upper surface for insertion of a votive. Since this base was found in the same place as a later inscription of the Sabaziastai (IG II² 1335, 102/1 BC), it is commonly assumed that these religious officials (hieropoioi) belonged to the same group. This is not a secure inference given the long interval of time separating the two inscriptions; but there are literary sources of the fifth and fourth centuries BC suggesting worship at Athens of Zeus (or Dionysos) Sabazios (a cult of perhaps Phrygian origin). See Kloppenborg and Ascough, Greco-Roman Associations, I no. 43, with notes. We can not tell whether the men named were Athenian citizens.
