[1] This is a dedication commemorating (honours awarded by?) stephanitai and tribesmen for victories at the Isthmian Games, the Amphiereia at Oropos and, it seems, another festival (l. 5). Stephanitai were traditionally “crowned” victors at sacred Panhellenic festivals, originally the Olympics, the Pythian, Nemean and Isthmian Games, but by the mid-3rd century BC other festivals also claimed “stephanitic” status (cf. W. J. Slater and D. Summa, GRBS 46, 2006, 280-81; S. Remijsen, ZPE 177, 2011, 97-109). The crown with serrated-edge leaves in col. 3 has conventionally been interpreted as parsley, but O. Broneer, AJA 66, 1962, 259-63, showed that Isthmian crowns were made of pine until the 5th cent. BC, and thereafter of celery or pine (cf. IG II³ 4, 594 and 610).
